$136 to $181 in WA is still less than a speeding ticket, which puts it at as much as a texting or cell-phone-use ticket, which means it STILL won’t be enforced.

Understood. However, based on articles and news segments I’ve digested throughout recent years on this subject, they’ve become at least somewhat serious about enforcement:

The Washington State Patrol says troopers pulled over 14,000 people for left lane camping and wrote over 2,300 tickets.

Impressive by the numbers, cause it sure as hell doesn’t feel like it, haha. I know they like to do “enforcement periods” where they get the local news to do ride-a-longs and pull people over for it, but it seems like it doesn’t do much.

Then again, spent some time in Denver, and our left-lane camping problem pales in comparison, haha.

same here - I just don’t see it much, (though I am usually only on the freeways at commute time or weekends...) And usually when I do run into one, folks are just bopping into the center/right lane to pass. Come to think of it - it’s usually a situation with a couple trucks. One pulls out to pass another at 1 mph faster so it take 27 years to get around...

God. Its a daily battle. I just wish they’d put more signs up. Seriously, i think most people just have no idea what they’re doing.

Doesn’t appear that the VA law carries any points, just the fine. This will be no different than the HOV law was before they added points to it, just the price of doing business for all the people who can afford getting pulled over for the offense occasionally.

It’s a fantastic idea, but I’ll bet enforcement lags way behind speed limits.

Also, the lane usage problem goes way, way deeper. How many times do you do 10-15mph over the limit in the right lane, with the left wide open, only to have someone tailgate so close they’re practically in your back seat? I often have to move to the left to let them pass, then move back over.

I’d like to see that claim audited - anecdotally, I’ve never heard of anyone receiving or knowing anyone who has received such a citation. And no doubt the grouchy old sonofabitch set who likes to LLC would tell everyone about how they were being picked on.

Seriously, i think most people just have no idea what they’re doing.

This I believe strikes at the root of the problem.

Although there are some drivers that don’t understand it is wrong to block the passing lane (when not passing), and wrong to weave from lane to lane, and wrong to pull out in front of people without looking, and wrong to just drive into another car, I believe the majority of drivers understand these behaviors are wrong.

The problem is the majority of people just don’t care that their actions are stupid, inconsiderate, or just plain dangerous.

They don’t want to *pass*, they just want to go faster than you. Passing involves lane changing, which takes effort and requires paying attention to what is around you. That’s too hard for today’s lazy distracted driver.
